Fishing Reports

We fished with Jeff Pfarr from Finksberg, Maryland and a recent graduate from West Virginia University, (Go Mountaineers) on  Thurs. and Friday this week.  Jeff had never caught a sailfish, so we made it top priority to fulfill his wish.   Spent a while catching bait as we only had one angler and myself.  Filled up with some pilchards and plenty of herring with a few gogs from the day before. Had a few mackeral bites with no takers.  Headed for some clean water and heard the bite was already hot this morning.  Set up our usual drift spread, and when we hit 140 ....fish on!  Jeff picked up the rod and immediately his sailfish started jumping towards the blue.   I looked at Jeff and saw him grinning as I screamed sail on!  He fought him like a pro and had him boatside within 10-15 minutes.  We took a great pic with my go pro camera,  and some nice video.  After high fives , we set up again and had a triple header sail with one being lost and the other 2 landed. We ended up the day going 4 for 7 on sailfish.  What a great day for Jeff, having a lasting memory of his first sailfish, and having his Mountaineers whip Clemsen.  Can't get any better!!!  Lets get out there for your first sail!!!   Capt. Dave and Mike Goldberg were guests aboard the Buffer Zone.  Caught plenty of bait and made our way out past gov cut to NW  15 knot winds.  Trolled out a bit and picked up a cero mackeral.  Put out a few livies in 100 ft  with no avail.  Set up the kite and mid depth rods with flatlines.  Made a few drifts with not much action.  Radio was pretty quiet.  Decided to put the big bait down and bam,  when I was letting it down it got crushed.  Line peeling off the reel,  knew it was a good fish. Dave took over and fought the fish beautifully.  After about 15 minutes, color appeared and it was another giant king.  We made one more drift in close and once again it was Dave who landed this beauty, red grouper!!  Lets get out there for your trophy!!!   33lbs   Capt. Matt

We had the pleasure of fishing with Richard Chase Sr.  Caught some herring and pilchards inside gov cut at the usual spot.  Trolled out and picked up a few mackeral and a huge blue runner,  threw him in for later.   Looking for some clean water , we headed out deep.   Set up the kite and flat lines and caught some small dolphin after a few drifts.  I decided to put out the huge blue runner on a deep line to entice a bigger fish.   Richard was taking shots at me, saying the runner was too big and I just laughed back, thinking in my mind watch this!!  Not more than 5 minutes the rod sizzled, taking the light drag rapidly.   After a tough battle of 15-20 minutes we could see color.   A huge king appeared and we got him into the boat With high fives all around, we headed back home with a lasting memory!!!     Weighed in  42 lbs!!!

Had the pleasure of fishing with resident Dr. Rodrigo Velasco, his dad and cousins. Headed out of Haulover and caught a few spanish mackeral right off the bat. (skunk gone) We tried to get a few more large baits but not happening.  Cruised out to 100 ft,  put out a few livies and bam fish on!  Rodrigo picked up the rod and reeled in a 12 lb king.  We got one more around 8 lbs and decide to go out in seasrch of dolphin.   Three dolphin had conceded and a decent blackfin tuna also.  Shark and bonito we also caught. Some nice fillets with some very nice people.

Fished with Scott Carpenter back in November for a morning tripfor spanish mackeral.  We got our bait and anchored on our spot just at the right tide.  It wasn't long before the macks made an appearance.  Scott had a blast also casting small lures to the macks.  We ended up with our limit and left with smiles from ear to ear!!
